With that being said, I have observed that all of the local web designers which consistently dominate page 1 in SERPS have literally thousands upon thousands of do follow and site-wide links in the footers of sites they have built. While this isn’t an exact science, when you think of the billions of pages online which need to be measured for trust, this is a highly scalable way of doing it, and the tests from the original paper showed that it worked well, too. If you see these, then you may be looking at a link exchange page where the webmaster has only put those links in place because he or she got one back from the site being linked to.

Hello paddy,More recently, I've used tools such as Kerboo which allows you to deal with very large link profiles quickly and scores the links for you. What I’d advise doing is trying to develop your gut feeling and instincts for link building. By far, the quickest way to do this is to have a few extensions or plugins added to your browser that can instantly give you some info. You weren't saying to ONLY pursue perfect links (I know). I'm just a little stressed out right now because (off-topic warning) of the numerous terrorist attacks that have been occurring where I live in Tel Aviv and elsewhere nearby over the past few days. Before reading this article I had the notion that the most important place a link could be is at the top of an article. If a webpage attracts links from other pages Google's algorithm, The software it utilizes to rank pages and make a decision which page is top for a search results page, enhances the value of a page. Yes, when it gets down to it, it can really be that simple and just naturally be a product of good marketing. Like Button for the Web. It is also possible to get links directly from images. You want exposure / traffic from links as well as the organic search rankings value. Apologies this is a shorter reply than it should be - I'm out on vacation right now and just checking in! Assess the quality of links using some of this metrics can be very useful. So it's more a mental model that people can use rather than a real one that we know 100% is used.
